Intera Partners aimed to raise €375m for its fifth fund. It closed at €450m. The Helsinki-based private equity firm announced on 3 November that Intera Fund V had reached its hard cap of €450m, 20% above its original target.

The final close was oversubscribed and came swiftly after the fund’s launch in March. Intera says it is the largest Finnish buyout fund to date.

The people who wrote the cheques

Fund V drew an international group of investors, including foundations, pension funds, insurers and institutional funds of funds. Finnish investors increased their commitments compared with Fund IV.

The fund combines long-standing investors with new institutional partners, and a majority of commitments came from existing investors, according to the announcement. Piper Sandler and Borenius advised on the fundraising.

Intera credits its historical performance, its long-standing investor relationships and its position in the Nordic mid-market buyout segment. It says its portfolio companies have, on average, quadrupled their sales while it owned them, and that 70% have expanded internationally.

What the money will buy

The plan is the same as before, Intera says. Fund V will back Finnish and Swedish entrepreneur-led service and technology companies that have room to grow and expand abroad. The larger fund will let the firm support more ambitious growth journeys.

Managing Partner Juhana Kallio said their strategy remains unchanged. According to him, Intera will keep partnering with ambitious growth companies and helping them scale and expand internationally. The larger fund lets the firm strengthen its role in accelerating the growth of Nordic market leaders.

A big close is not the same as an easy one. Dealroom, a firm that tracks private-market deals, called the raise a vote of confidence in Intera’s record, not evidence that fundraising is easy. It said the real test comes now: whether Intera can put the larger fund to work and deliver exits.

A long climb

Intera was founded in 2007 and has raised a bigger fund each time.

Fund II raised €200m and Fund III €250m. Fund IV closed in June 2021 at its €335m hard cap, above a target of €300m. Fund V is about a third larger than that.

In nearly 20 years, the firm says, it has made 37 investments and completed around 500 add-on acquisitions. It names Cervi, Kreate, PHM Group, Rantalainen, Renta and Roima among the companies in its track record.
