In the frost-laden suburb of Tikkurila, Vantaa, whilst locals prepare for Christmas festivities, a cutting-edge artificial intelligence trial is quietly underway. Eminus Industries Oy, a pioneering Finnish tech firm, is leveraging existing CCTV infrastructure to test their sophisticated AI algorithms during the area’s Winterfest celebrations.

Founded in 2023 in the tech hub of Espoo, Eminus Industries has developed a real-time AI system with remarkable dual-use capabilities, spanning both defence applications and civilian security enhancement. The company’s founders, Nico Aksentjeff and Anton Glad, have focused their innovation on maximising the potential of existing camera networks, thereby allowing organisations to redirect valuable human and financial resources to more nuanced tasks beyond AI’s current capabilities.

What sets their solution apart is its device-agnostic nature and seamless integration with existing systems. The AI software notably enhances privacy protection compared to conventional surveillance systems, targeting only specific security anomalies in urban environments. The autonomous system generates advanced analytics and actionable insights based on specific use cases, garnering positive feedback from early adopters.

“Security and responsibility are at the core of our mission,” emphasises Glad, “as we work towards building a more peaceful future”, the founders of Eminus Industries say.

Develop Products and Services by Testing in Urban Environments

The trial is taking place under the auspices of the City of Vantaa’s innovative testing platform programme, which forms part of the Finnish AI Region (FAIR) initiative. The programme offers businesses and R&D actors opportunities to field-test developmental services and products in real-world conditions.

The city currently facilitates trials across various venues, including the Vantaa Vocational College, built environment sectors, and a robotics learning centre. Interested parties meeting FAIR’s criteria can initiate trials through the City of Vantaa’s “Experiment in Vantaa” service or FAIR’s customer representatives.
