Finland’s state-owned technical research centre VTT and defence materiel maintenance company Millog have signed a partnership agreement to advance research and innovation in the defence sector.

The agreement, signed on 7 November, aims to develop solutions that strengthen national security both in Finland and internationally.

At the heart of the collaboration is a drive to bring new technologies rapidly into use by the Finnish Defence Forces. These could include existing technologies, new innovations and dual-use technologies applicable to both civilian and military purposes.

Civilian expertise supporting defence

Both organisations operate within numerous domestic and international defence networks. The new agreement aims to enhance their support for innovation within these networks.

“VTT’s multidisciplinary research and development expertise, research facilities and extensive collaborative networks help companies develop more competitive products. We are refining an increasing number of innovations for use in the defence sector as well,” said VTT chief executive Kalle Härkki.

According to Millog chief executive Janne Tarvainen, the partnership combines VTT’s technological expertise and research community with Millog’s defence materiel knowledge and industrial networks.

“We have identified a need to support the agile development and deployment of new technologies and innovations,” Tarvainen said.

The collaboration comes amid changes in the security environment that require closer co-operation between society’s security-critical actors.
